Scale Space Building C

Brennan was contracted to construct Building C of the Scale Space Development on the Wood Lane site for Imperial College.  The shell and core construction comprised a new steel-framed, metal-clad, open-plan four-storey office and amenity core building, attached to Building B on the north elevation.

5 main phases of construction

  1. Ground work & piling
  2. Substructure & drainage
  3. Superstructure and facades
  4. Internal fit-out to core areas
  5. Commissioning of services

Key packages of work included the cladding using SFS panels, ensuring that all structural design interfaced efficiently with drainage and ductwork, and that the complex mechanical and engineering works were installed and commissioned effectively.

Key employer benefits

The previous two phases were constructed using a modular building system however this created restrictions in terms of flexible layout. For the third phase the Employer was keen to explore alternative methods of construction which would provide greater flexibility as well as providing better value for money.

Brennan, together with our design team, produced a design, based principally on traditional construction techniques which met this criterion. While construction time, compared to off site manufacture, was increased this was mitigated by our ability to commence works on site well in advance of the timescales offered for off-site manufacture.

Achieved a BREEAM “Very Good” rating
